El DAF Turbo Twin X1 fue famoso por tener dos motores turbodiésel que sumaban 1200cv para mover una mole de 11 toneladas.
En 1987 corrió el París-Dakar quedando 11 en la general, por delante de muchas coches y motos, siendo primero en su categoría, a 14 horas de ventaja del segundo camión.
En 1988 iban a por todas, logrando incluso adelantar a más de 200km/h al Peugeot 405 T16 de Ari Vatanen. Una proeza que quedó ensombrecida por un fatal accidente más adelante.
DAF se retiró en señal de luto por lo sucedido.
