Tom Holland is bringing a youthful energy to Jonathan; the backpacking human who by accident stumbles into Hotel Transylvania during a monsters-only celebration and has to pretend he is one of the creatures of the night so that he does not get devoured by all of the guests who see humans as either prey or as something they have nightmares about. His natural charm creates chemistry with Emma Stone's Mavis as well as a sense of wonder at worlds they have each been sheltered from. Emma Stone brings both ethereal beauty and a real edge to Mavis Dracula, the vampire princess who is celebrating her 118th birthday and will finally leave the confines of the hotel; however, her isolated upbringing has made her both confident in her vampire abilities and totally naive about the human world that her father has told her is full of dangers. Keanu Reeves enters as Count Dracula, with a real comedic timing and paternal warmth, as the overprotective single father whose elaborate plans are to keep his daughter safe due to the trauma of Charlize Theron's Martha being killed by humans hundreds of years ago -- which changed him from a romantic idealist into a paranoid protector who built a fortress disguised as a vacation resort.

This live action adaptation works because it treats the monster/human prejudice with serious weight while keeping the same heart and humor that made the animated films such a fun family movie experience. You will also see some great practical effects and prosthetic makeup bring back to life the classic Universal monsters - Frankenstein's monster, the Invisible Man, the Mummy, etc. - each one was made to be faithful to its horror roots but also friendly enough for kids so they won't be traumatized. The film also examines the issues of prejudice and fear using the fantasy lens, asking the question of if the protection becomes a prison when it is based on assumptions instead of real danger, and if love can cross the lines that have been established by generations of mutual fear. Holland and Stone's romance develops with genuine sweetness as two sheltered souls find out that the scary stories they had heard about each other's worlds were actually propaganda designed to keep them separate, not fact. Expect visual spectacle as the hotel comes alive with monster guests whose supernatural abilities create both comedy and real magic, Reeves provides some funny physical comedy as Dracula trying to keep up with his elaborate lies while watching his daughter fall for the type of person he has spent the last 100 years protecting her from, and the finale proves that sometimes the bravest thing parents can do is let their children learn that the world is not as scary as they thought it would be based on their fears.
